Rick grew up on a farm south of Stonewall, Manitoba, Canada (near Winnipeg). He studied animal science at the University of Manitoba, then worked on the farm for several years. Rick started sailing at Lake of the Woods in 1982 on his first boat “Manatee”, a Mirage 25. Rick sailed Manatee until moving to Colorado in 1990. He spent many years working in the window coverings industry, eventually starting ESI in 2000 with his partner. Throughout the years his dream of sailing around the world never ended.
Brenda grew up on an apple orchard near Fort Wayne Indiana, USA. She has always had a love of nature. She studied Pharmacy at Purdue University and graduated in 1990. After college, she moved to Colorado and continued her love of nature, as well as developed a love for travel. After 20 years of practicing pharmacy, she met and fell for a crazy sailer. She knew from the second date that Rick’s dream was to sail around the world. She was game to learn about sailing and has now traded in her Broomfield, CO, home for the good ship Amara. She how lives aboard Amara, exploring the east coast of the USA, the Caribbean and the Pacific.
